The Markham Islanders, Majors, and Sledge hockey organizations have been a cherished family tradition since 1980.
The journey began in 1978 when Sylvia and Jerry Jacobs shared a dream at their kitchen table in Thornhill. They aspired to establish a team that would compete and participate in the MTHL (now the GTHL).
After a protracted two-year battle with the OMHA, their dream finally came to fruition, reaching the courts due to the fact that children from Thornhill were under the OMHA’s jurisdiction and were reluctant to allow them to leave.
Fast forward to the present, as we eagerly anticipate the upcoming hockey season with the resumption of open borders. This milestone represents a dream that seemed unattainable within the realm of minor hockey in Ontario.
Unsurprisingly, we have chosen to announce our coaching lineup on the most significant day of the year, Family Day. Family is paramount to us, regardless of whether you participate in AAA for our Majors, AA or A with our Islanders, Sledge teams, or with our Intro to Hockey and Development Programs. You are all part of our family.
With this in mind, we extend our heartfelt wishes to all our current families for the remainder of the season. We extend a warm welcome to both existing and new families who will join us for the upcoming 2025-26 season and wish you all nothing but success at the upcoming tryouts.

U10 ‘A’ Markham Islanders support three charitable initiatives this holiday season
Despite the busyness of the hockey season, the Under-10 ‘A’ Markham Islanders took the time to give back to three community initiatives. Between November 23 and December 1, the team engaged with the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) Stuff the Bus event, the Toronto Police Community Program, and the Salvation Army Shelter in Barrie.
As part of the TTC’s Stuff the Bus efforts, each member of the team donated a new toy for children in need. For the Toronto Police Community Program, the team made a monetary donation to help families in the community. As part of the Salvation Army contribution, the Islanders donated food on their way to a tournament.
With your help we collected 26 hockey bags filled with new and gentley used hockey equipment along with dozens of sticks for the Little Native Hockey League.
The first Annual Sylvia Jacobs Memorial Winter Classic hockey game was a game to remember. We saw the Markham Majors U14AAA team take on our Sledge Team with the Sledge team coming out victorious final score of 4 to 3!
